A 100 gallon aquarium is not cheap to buy; also you need to think about just how much it is going to be costing you after you have it up and running.  However, before you even rush out to buy yourself a 100 gallon aquarium, there are certain things that you need to think about.

The first thing that you are going to consider is whether you want yours to be a saltwater or freshwater one.  Then you need to decide what kinds of fish you wish to keep in yours.  The third thing to consider before you buy a 100 gallon aquarium is what types of heaters and filters are required.

Of course another important to decision to make when purchasing a 100 gallon aquarium, is the shape you want, plus what accessories and decorations you want to go in it.  You also need to think about the kind of stand or cabinet that you want to place it on.

Below we look at answering some of the points raised above, which will provide you with an idea of what you need to know before you do spend money on a 100 gallon aquarium.

100 Gallon Aquarium – Is It To Be A Freshwater Or Saltwater One?

This is the most important decision you need to make when you are going out to buy your 100 gallon aquarium.  As you will soon discover, a freshwater aquarium is not only a lot less expensive than a saltwater one, but is also much easier to maintain.

The problem with owning a saltwater 100 gallon aquarium is that you need to pay attention to the details and make sure that the pH levels within the tank's water remain correct.  So you will find yourself faced with the additional cost of having to purchase chemicals in order to keep the environment inside the tank ideal for the fish and other marine life you have in yours.

As for the fish you put into your aquarium, this will come down to whether you have chosen to go for a saltwater or freshwater one.  Although you can have wonderful species of fish such as Catfish and Oscars in a freshwater 100 gallon aquarium; the great thing about a saltwater one, is that it allows you to have much more exotic species of fish and marine life in it, such as Lionfish, Anemones, Moray Eels and Corals.

Other 100 Gallon Aquarium Purchasing Considerations

Once you have decided whether your 100 gallon aquarium is to be freshwater or saltwater one, you need to make a decision on which material it is to be made from.  You have the choice between either purchasing a traditional glass tank or the more modern lightweight acrylic ones.

What is a good idea however, is that you spend as much time as you can reading reviews on the various different designs that are available.  There are many places online that allow you quickly and easily to not only compare prices of the various 100 gallon aquariums, but all the accessories that you are going to need as well.

Plus when you are thinking about purchasing a 100 gallon aquarium, you need to actually take into consideration the time and cost of getting an aquarium installation of this size carried out.  Certainly the price of the tank is not going to be cheap, and you need to factor in the costs of the other main equipment to keep it running properly.
