As you will soon discover, if you search online or visit your local pet store or aquarium supply store, there are numerous different kinds of gallon aquarium tanks to choose form. They come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and are made from a wide range of materials.
What Framework Can Your Gallon Aquarium Tank Have?
Many of the more traditional styles of gallon aquarium tanks will come with a metal framework that holds the sheets of glass in them together. The metal most commonly used for such a framework on a gallon aquarium tank, will either be angle iron or stainless steel. These will be welded together at the various corners of the frame and the glass slotted into the frame.
To prevent leakage of water from the gallon aquarium tank, putty aquarium cement, silicon or acrylic sealant will be placed between the edges of the glass and the framework. However, these can become stressed if they are not on a level platform (stand), and the chances of the glass cracking are greatly increased.
The other framework that a gallon aquarium tank can be made from is wood. These types of frames are traditionally constructed from plywood as they are less likely to warp if they come into contact with water. Again a good quality epoxy sealant will be required to prevent leakage of water from the tank. The big advantage to having a wooden frame over a metal one, is that it can then be covered in a material to match the room’s décor or just varnished.
What Other Materials Are Used In The Construction Of A Gallon Aquarium Tank
For many centuries now, traditionally a gallon aquarium tank would have been made using glass. However, today many types of plastic such as acrylic are now being used to build aquariums. Although they are more expensive to purchase, they weigh a lot less and can be made into any design that you want.
However, although a gallon aquarium tank made from acrylic is much lighter and far less likely to break, this plastic is soft and so the chances of them becoming scratched is much higher compared to that of a glass one. When cleaning an acrylic tank, you have to be careful that you do not accidentally rub gravel, rocks, or coral against the tank panels. Scratches may be easily buffed out of an acrylic tank whereas scratches in glass are forever!
Another thing which one can use to enhance the look of your gallon aquarium tank, is a glass like material known as Vitrolite. This comes in a wide range of colors and can provide some wonderful effects to the sides and backs of the tank. Plus Vitrolite is also opaque, which provides you with the chance to hide those unsightly wires and other pieces of equipment you are using to maintain the right environment in the tank.
When you are going out to purchase a gallon aquarium tank, as mentioned previously, it is crucial that you do your research before making your purchase. It is a good idea to read various reviews on the different makes of gallon aquarium tanks before you go shopping for yours. Again the internet is one of the best places to look for information and enables you to compare the prices of each one quickly and easily.
