Saltwater aquarium problems can arise at any time. So it is vital that you have some kind of plan in place which will enable you to deal with these kinds of saltwater aquarium emergencies when they arise. This plan will help to make sure that the salt water fish in your tank will survive the situation.

Some of the most common problems faced by aquarists with their saltwater aquariums is that the power will fail, the tank springs a leak, or the aquarium saltwater heaters become overheated or the water becomes polluted. As you will be unable to actually second guess when a problem is going to arise, you need to make sure that you regularly monitor the condition of your aquarium.

If you do find yourself with a problem then it is important that you look closely at how the fish and invertebrates are coping in the aquarium saltwater. You also need to spend time inspecting the other marine life that is in your aquarium including corals and live rocks.

Aquarium Saltwater Tank Power Failure - How To Deal With It?

Power failures are one of these aquarium saltwater emergencies which one has no real control over to prevent. What is important, however is that if you do lose power to your home, then you must make sure that the aquarium saltwater is aerated. Generally as long as the power failure is not something that lasts for more than 24 hours, then the fish and other aquarium saltwater marine life and plants should be able to cope with this particular situation.

However, it is a good idea if you purchase an air pump which is powered by batteries at the same time as you buy other aquarium saltwater supplies. This piece of equipment helps to make sure that the oxygen levels within the aquarium saltwater can be dissolved correctly. When it comes to retaining heat in your aquarium when power has been lost, wrap a thick blanket or sleeping bag around the tank. One thing that you shouldn't do whilst you have no power to your aquarium saltwater tank is feed the fish and marine life inside it. Remember along with no lights or heaters the filtration system will not be working either.

Coping With Your Aquarium Saltwater Overheating

If you find that the heater in your aquarium begins to overheat, then don't become unduly worried as most types of aquarium saltwater fish can easily withstand the water temperature going up to as much as 86 Fahrenheit, although they may not like it. But you should try to avoid this problem occurring if you can, rather than having to deal with it.

The best way of avoiding this particular problem in your aquarium saltwater tank is to use two small or medium sized heaters rather than one large one. Having two in situ means that the other one can carry on working if there is a problem with the other, and certainly you are likely to detect a problem more quickly.

Should you identify a problem with one of the heaters in your aquarium, then make sure that you turn the temperature down or turn it off completely. It is now crucial that you remove between 20 and 50% of the aquarium saltwater in the tank, and in its place put some bags which contain ice. Doing this will help to lower the temperature of the water that is left in the aquarium. Also don't throw away the aquarium saltwater you have taken out of the tank, but allow it to cool and once it has returned to its normal temperature level, you can very slowly add it back in to the aquarium.
