Owning Saltwater And Freshwater Fish - What Are The Differences?
By Trish The Aquarium LadyThe first you should note is that freshwater fish kept in aquariums will have been harvested from lakes, ponds, rivers or streams. Whereas saltwater fish and invertebrates that are kept in aquariums will have been harvested from the seas and oceans.
Because most freshwater fish are actually raised in breeding tanks or ponds, these fish find it far easier to adapt to life in an aquarium. Unfortunately, when it comes to saltwater fish, including Angelfish, Clownfish, Bluefish, Butterfly, Damsel and Goby fish which are juveniles, these have often been taken directly from their natural environment and find it that more difficult to adapt to a new environment. This is because there will be changes in water's chemical composition along with its temperature.
The Equipment Required For Keeping Saltwater Fish
When you are looking for an aquarium tank in which you will be keeping your tropical saltwater fish along with any coral, you should only purchase the best you can. Also it is crucial that you buy the best quality along with the most reliable pieces of equipment for the saltwater aquarium. Unfortunately, the cost of purchasing saltwater fish is not cheap and you don't want to be in a position where, because equipment has failed, you may well lose the fish that you recently purchased.
As well as buying a good tank, the other essential pieces of equipment needed for keeping salt water fish in a good environment, are a heater and a good filtration system. If you want, rather than going for a filtration system that sits on the side of the tank, you can go for one of the under gravel filters, but this is not essential.
When it comes to the tank, if you can purchase a large one, this would be great. Having a large tank will help make the process of ensuring that the balance of chemicals in the tank remain equal much easier. Also having a larger tank provides you with the option to keep a wide selection of different types of saltwater fish and marine life in it, including corals that provide you with the chance to have a miniature reef in yours. You shouldn't, however buy a large tank if you aren't able to buy the right equipment which will ensure that it runs correctly. Instead it is far better to go for a medium size tank, and one of around 30 to 55 gallons should be more than suitable and which most people choose initially when setting up a saltwater aquarium.
How Hard Is It To Keep Saltwater Fish?
When it comes to keeping saltwater fish, there are certain species of tropical fish that find it much easier to adapt to changes in their environment and lives than others. What is important however, is that you learn as much as you can about the various different species of salt water fish before you purchase them. Knowing more about each breed will help you to better understand the ways in which you can help them with getting use to their new environment and so they are likely to lead much happier lives.
A good thing to do is spend time at the store where you are making your purchases and see just how the saltwater fish are coping with the changes. Yes they may seem healthy at the store, but you may find that the move from there to your home is one too many. So don't make your purchases straightaway, but rather go back several times.
