Saltwater aquarium fish are very difficult to keep; the main problem being that the majority of tropical saltwater aquarium fish and invertebrates will be damaged when being caught, when handled, and when they are shipped. Also you need to be aware that certain species of saltwater aquarium fish that you can buy have particular requirements, which you as an aquarist won’t be able to meet.

Saltwater Aquarium Fish - A Guide To Selecting The Right Ones

  1. Instead of purchasing new saltwater aquarium fish, it is far better if you buy those which have been at the store for a couple of weeks at least. Yes the new ones may have coped with being captured, handled and then shipped to the store, but they may well have some disease of which you are unaware and which if it appears, then the owner of the shop will be able to deal with the problem more easily than you could.

  2. When selecting your saltwater aquarium fish, inspect every live species that the store has to offer. Therefore whether you are buying Angelfish, Hawkfish, Butterfly Fish, Clownfish or any other type of marine fish for your saltwater aquarium, spend a little time watching the way they swim, breathe and behave in their current environment.

  3. Also it is a good idea to spend time watching how the saltwater aquarium fish in the store feed. Are the fish alert and are they willing to eat the food which has been provided to them? If you can, don't purchase any of the coral feeding fish or the sponge eating Rock Beauties which the store may want to sell to you.

  4. Before you do go out to buy any saltwater aquarium fish, it is important that you learn something about each of the species that you are considering purchasing. It is important that you understand what each species needs in order to survive in the environment in your aquarium. You need to know what other saltwater aquarium fish and invertebrates they can live with and just how hardy each species is.

When it comes to your keeping saltwater aquarium fish, ideally you should select species that are compatible with others. Therefore if you have a slow eating saltwater aquarium fish, then the other breeds should be slow eaters as well. If you intend to keep aggressive varieties such as chow-hounds, then make sure that such breeds are kept in their own tank.

There are several types of saltwater aquarium fish which are suitable for putting into a tank when you first begin your hobby. Below we look at just some of the different species one needs to be keeping in your saltwater aquarium.

  1. Damsels - When you are first setting up an aquarium, these are the ideal saltwater aquarium fish to keep in it initially. Of all the different species of saltwater aquarium fish one can purchase, these are among the most hardiest of them. Plus the cost of purchasing these fish is relatively inexpensive and you never purchase more than a couple, as large groups tend to fight.

  2. Mollies - These are in fact freshwater fish, but you can actually prepare them so that they are able to live in a saltwater environment also. Again these types of saltwater aquarium fish don't cost much to buy, and the way to get them used to living in a salt water environment is by keeping them in the bags which they were bought, and adding some aquarium salt to the water in it over a six to eight hour period. It is important that over this time you gradually increase the amount of aquarium salt in the water.

  3. Angelfish - This species offers you a wide variety of different colors to choose from, but initially these are not the right saltwater aquarium fish to be keeping. Although the Black Nox Angel Fish, Blue Fin Angel Fish, Bicolor Angelfish, Cortez Angelfish and Cream Angelfish may be wonderful to look at, they are among the most delicate of all saltwater aquarium fish so they find it much harder to get used to a new environment.

In this article we have offered some information with regard to setting up your first tank to keep saltwater aquarium fish in, which you may find extremely useful. However, to ensure that your saltwater aquarium fish can live healthy happy lives, you need to learn how to care for them and make sure that they are getting the right proteins and minerals in their diet. So you should spend time learning everything that you possibly can about each species of saltwater aquarium fish that you intend to buy and keep.
