Saltwater aquariums require much more maintenance than a freshwater aquarium does to ensure that the fish inside it remain healthy. You need to be aware that certain minerals and nutrients, which the fish take out of the water in saltwater aquariums become depleted over time. So there are going to be times when you need to use some supplements that you put in the water to replenish them.

But not always do aquarists need to add supplements to their saltwater aquariums, as they are maintaining theirs well. If you are someone who has saltwater fish such as Clownfish or Angelfish in your aquarium, and do change the water regularly along with carrying out regularly maintenance of the tank, then adding supplements may not be something that you have to do.

The reason for this is that every time you change the water in saltwater aquariums, you are actually replenishing it with the essential nutrients and minerals that the fish in the tank need. However, if you have a salt water aquarium into which you have placed corals, then you are going to include supplements in the tank to help the levels of calcium in the water right.

Determining If Saltwater Aquariums Need Supplements

The most effective and simplest way of determining if you need to put any supplements in your saltwater aquarium is to test the water. There are a wide variety of test kits now available that you can purchase either online or through your local tropical fish store. These will help you to identify what is missing out of the salt water in your aquarium and how much needs to be added.

However you need to be careful when adding supplements as trying to deal with too much in the saltwater aquariums can prove very difficult. The only way in which such a problem can be dealt with is through your changing all the water in the tank rather than just some of it. Unfortunately removing all the water from a tank can put untold stress on the fish, coral and plants living in it.

Kinds Of Supplements For Putting Into Saltwater Aquariums

Debate still wages about whether adding supplements to saltwater aquariums is essential or not, simply because many aquarists believe that just by changing some of the water regularly in a tank will help to replenish those essential elements. This certainly seems to be the case when it comes to your owing saltwater aquariums where just tropical fish and fish with live rocks are kept. But for those saltwater aquariums which have reef coral in them, then adding a calcium supplement as mentioned previously is important. But along with calcium you may find that for your reef coral aquarium, you might also have to add some Kalkwasser and magnesium.

You need to add calcium supplements in to reef saltwater aquariums with coral, as it not only aids their growth, but the growth of algae and invertebrates in the tank as well. Without adding any kind of supplements to your saltwater aquariums, you may find it far more difficult to provide the right kind of environment that would normally be what the tropical fish and other marine life in your tank are use to in the wild.

Luckily you can purchase a variety of different products through your local aquarium supply company or online and that you put the right amount of calcium into your salt water aquarium. They come either in tablet or liquid form and certainly adding the liquid form of this supplement to saltwater aquariums is far easier, but it does cost more. However, to avoid the water from becoming too acidic when you add calcium to saltwater aquariums, you may find that you also have to add some bicarbonate or carbonate to the water as well. However if you discover the level of alkalinity in the water going below 2.5meg per liter of salt water, then you may well need to add some Kalkwasser to it.
