Saltwater fish aquariums are far more difficult to set up than you would have first thought. There are several things which you will need to do before you can even put any kind of marine life, fish, coral or plants into saltwater fish aquariums.

It is important that one sets up saltwater fish aquariums correctly if you want to make sure that all the marine life and saltwater fish in it remain healthy. It is therefore important that the first thing you do is purchase all the right sorts of saltwater aquarium supplies.

Steps For Setting Up Saltwater Fish Aquariums

First off you need to actually purchase the right type of tank that will be used as your saltwater fish aquarium. Ideally go with the one that has been recommended by those working in the store where you are purchasing your aquarium tank from. Only when you have taken the tank home can you move on to the next stage in preparing saltwater fish aquariums so that you can then put the fish and marine life into it.

  • Step 1 - The first thing to do after getting the tank home is to thoroughly clean it out with warm freshwater. Never leave the tank as is before setting up, as you never know what dust and dirt has accumulated on it whilst being stood in the shop, and cleaning the tank makes it easier to apply a background to your tank if you are going to have one.

  • Step 2 - The next thing to do is situate the stand for saltwater fish aquariums where it is going to be located in your home. Remember the stand and aquarium needs to be close to a electrical outlet and also the floor on which the stand is going to be is level. Plus you need to make sure that you can easily access the tank from all sides.

  • Step 3 - However before you put the aquarium onto its stand, you need to make sure that the padding provided with it is in place.  Along with cushioning the base of the tank it also helps to keep saltwater fish aquariums level.

  • Step 4 - Once you have got the tank on the stand, now you can start putting into the tank the other pieces of equipment which are essential to running saltwater fish aquariums. The first thing which should be placed into the tank is the filtration system, especially if it is one which will be placed underneath the gravel, otherwise it will be one which hangs on the side of the tank. Once you have the filtration system in place, now put in the gravel or marine sand and it should be at least 2 or 3 inches deep and also put more so that you have a bank effect at the back of the tank.

  • Step 5 - After you have the gravel in place you can now start adding the water to the aquarium. When setting up saltwater fish aquariums, it is best if you either let the water stand for several days before putting it into the tank or use a special saltwater mixture in to freshwater. But even though the water is going into the tank, you should not be thinking about putting the fish, plants or other marine life into the saltwater fish aquariums just yet.

Saltwater Fish Aquariums - What To Do Now The Water Is In

After the water has been put in the tank and you have put in the pump to heat the water, you now need to leave all the equipment that has been installed in the saltwater fish aquariums running, for at least 24 hours, before putting in the coral, plants and tropical fish. During this time you will be able to see if the equipment is running properly and you will be able to make sure that the temperature has reached the right level in the water, which will provide the right kind of environment for your aquarium fish and other marine life.

If you have a protein skimmer installed in your saltwater fish aquarium, then you won't be able to see if it is running correctly at this stage. However, what you will see is bubbles being produced by it so you will know that it is working.

To ensure that the salt, protein and pH levels in saltwater fish aquariums are correct before you put any fish or other marine life into the tank, then a test needs to be carried out. Today you can get home testing kits which you can purchase easily from any good saltwater aquarium supply company either online or locally.

It is crucial that you follow the steps we have mentioned above, before you do actually move on to the next stage when setting up saltwater fish aquariums. If you don't, then you may find yourself in a situation where you need to replace some or all of the plants, corals and fish in the aquarium as they found it difficult to cope with their new environment.
