Tips For Buying A Saltwater Reef Aquarium

Saltwater reef aquariums can either be set up from scratch or be ready prepared and contain an established community within them. These types of aquariums are very easy to purchase from any aquarium manufacturer and ideal for people who neither have the time or knowledge to be able to set up a saltwater reef aquarium from scratch for them. For these people they don't have to deal with the hassles and problems that many have faced when setting up this particular kind of aquarium.

But for those who do want to set up their own saltwater reef aquarium, then they need lots of time and patience to commit to such a project. Unfortunately with this kind of aquarium you will find that it is going to take you several months before the setup is correct so that the fish which you keep in it remain healthy. However, in a ready prepared saltwater reef aquarium the hard work has been carried out by a professional using techniques that allow the corals, plants, live rocks and tropical fish to live happily in this artificial environment.

Saltwater Reef Aquarium - Things To Look For When Buying A Ready Prepared One

In a saltwater reef aquarium there will be a number of different types of coral living in it. When buying one that is already established, find out from the supply company where they actually obtain the corals for their reefs from. It is best if you go for one who actually grows and harvests their own corals in their own farms rather than those which have been collected from the wild.

The problem with those which have been taken from the wild either legally or illegally is that it could be causing damage to the ecological makeup of the environment from which they have been taken. Also any corals which are obtained from their natural habitat from inclusion in a ready saltwater reef aquarium, will find it far more difficult to actually acclimatize to an artificial environment.

A benefit to be gained from getting a ready saltwater reef aquarium is that these come with the complete set of chemicals to ensure that you are able to prepare the freshwater for it, and therefore help to establish the right environment for the tropical fish, corals, plants and live rocks in it. Look for those kits that come with not just a tool for controlling the temperature of the water, but also an electronic pH meter and a saline system to allow the correct amount of salt to be introduced into the water. It is this equipment which will enable you to adjust the water to ensure that it then meets the requirements of all the corals and fish in it.

Another thing which needs to be considered when one is setting up a saltwater reef aquarium is the type of water flow that you want to happen in it. There are three different kinds of water flow systems available and they all need a specific pump to produce the water flow you are after.

Ready Saltwater Reef Aquarium - Types Of Water Flow

  1. Laminar Flow - The pump that produces this water flow makes it flow horizontally and in just one direction only. A power head is the piece of equipment you will need to install at one end of your saltwater reef aquarium to force the water to flow in one particular direction constantly. This system does not actually allow the water to really circulate around the aquarium effectively.

  2. The Power or Surge Flow System - This system again will force the water to be pushed around the saltwater reef aquarium tank horizontally. However, it does not just flow in one direction; the pump that you use stops and then starts up again to force the water to flow in the opposite direction from what it was doing previously. The only advantage that this has over the laminar flow pump, is that it forces the water to move in opposite directions.

  3. The Turbulent Flow System - Of the water flow systems we have mentioned for installing in a saltwater reef aquarium, this is the best. This will force the water in the tank to flow in a number of different directions and the turbulence it causes is far better for the wellbeing of the marine life contained within it. What is important to remember is that the corals in reefs in their natural habitats will be constantly moving because of the tidal motions of the sea or ocean and it actually provides them with exercise.
